John,

Thank you!  The prototype had 8 chuffs/rev, or more accurately 4 double chuffs/rev, so my O gauge engine will have the same.  The Lionel T1's RailSounds board along with the add-on EOB's multiple chuff settings gave me the 4 double chuff effect and I really like it (that is once you fixed it).  The only way I would go with ERR is if I can get the same effect.  Plus a better smoke unit.

With the EOB, LEDs, and beveled center drivers, it is becoming my most expensive engine.  Like Larry, I really like the engine after you got it running.  But that EOB unit is troublesome at times.

In order to get all the features that the TAS EOB offers, you have to add some stuff in addition to the ERR package.  My solution is my new Chuff Generator and the Super-Chuffer.  This adds the programmable chuff, smoke at idle, Rule-17 lighting, and cab light control.  With the new Chuff Generator, you can even add ground lights that are controlled by the locomotive speed.

OK I have that Lionel T-1. Is it complicated to add the new board or is there more to it?

My T1 is an early MTH Proto 1. I doesn't sound anything like that and P1 doesn't have the synchronous chuffing smoke.
I am going to have to upgrade that engine someday.

I hear you! I have that same engine and wondering if I should upgrade to Ps3? [ right now it seems a lot cheaper to upgrade.]

The PS32 upgrade is cheaper than the full ERR upgrade since you have to add some extras to the ERR package.

OTOH, when I do a full upgrade of these, you get Rule-17 lighting, automatic cab light control, and now you can optionally get ground lights automatically controlled by locomotive speed.  Although the PS/3 board is capable of much of this, the PS32 steam upgrade doesn't have the capability.

John,

Is your "new Chuff Generator" one of the boards you put in my K-line Scale Hudson? It's getting so that I cannot keep up with the "magic" you create.

Mike

I have the same locomotive.  The Legacy unit has most of the Super-Chuffer enhancements, I don't recall if mine has the idle smoke, the only thing I can think it might be missing.  It has chuffing smoke, Rule-17 lighting, and cab light control.  You may just need a smoke unit tune-up.  The Super-Chuffer would probably improve the appearance of the smoke, but maybe not enough to justify the expense of installing one.

I confess, I forget what was in your Polar Express upgrade...

GRJ,

It's an older version PE from the traditional set.  You installed LEDs, backup light, TMCC and a old style chuff controller.  That old controller skips a lot at certain speeds.  Was hoping an upgrade to the Super Chuffer etc, will improve smoke and chuff rate.  Of course, if you take it on, I'll appreciate an "other" enhancements you can suggest.  It's a classic in our house.

Ron
