74FFD997-FC57-4DF0-BC0A-8FA162594004This weekend I pulled out of storage my late 50’s 736 Berkshire which hasn’t been on the rails in 40 years. I wanted to perform a little preventative maintenance. A couple of questions for you: 1) I am having difficulty trying to remove the worm cover. Tried to lift up with a pick but it will not come off. 2) Does the motor need to be removed to remove the cover?  3) Is that a lubrication hole near the body for the motor seen between the wires?

It currently runs smoothly without binding, however I want to see the condition of the worm gear grease.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

That cover will definitely come off but remember its been sitting like that for at least 40 years and it is very likely some of the grease may have congealed around the cover's lip and really hardened up.  As stated a small flat headed screwdriver could do the job with a light prying motion.  Failing that I would suggest purchasing a container of Break Free CLP which is used in freeing up jammed automatic weapons by the military.  It comes in liquid and spray forms and it works great.  I have used it many times on engine parts which have frozen up over the years and have never been disappointed in the results.  You can get it on line or even at Dick's Sporting Goods.  Just give the cover's seam a shot of this stuff and let it cure for a couple of hours, maybe even overnight if it won't budge.  I have had the same problem with an old 736 and was able to pry the cover off.  You should be OK.  Also, my advice would be to clean out that worm sump with some CDC contact cleaner and replace that 60 year old grease with a supply of Lucas's Red and Tacky.   In your video that vintage 736 runs really smooth but a new supply of lubricant will enhance its running characteristics.
