I read the 2017 vol. 1 catalog about the Hiawatha paint scheme being fantasy, did the Lackawanna have this type of locomotive, and if so did they use if for freight and passenger service? I looked on-line and could not find any thing definitive. The railroad did run through some beautiful country in PA.

Any Lackawanna fans out there? I haven't seen many Lackawanna steam engines from the toy train companies...am guessing Weaver may have made some when they were in business, but am not sure.

But the Steamtown treatment was a 1:1 fantasy - so, is a model of a fantasy a real model or a continuation of the fantasy?

Ah, philosophy. Like, how many Niagaras would fit on the head of a very large pin?

It's nothing new...  Back around 1973 the Delaware & Hudson reworked Reading 2102 (along with an ex-CPR 4-6-2 who's number escapes me) into "D&H 302"  and "D&H 653"to celebrate the road's sesquicentennial:

4-8-4 D&H 302 kitbash Sesquicentenniai ex RDG 2102

4-6-2 D&H 653 ex CPR

And C&O 2716 became "Southern 2716" in 1981 for their steam program:

2-8-4 Southern 2716 ex C&O

So, Lionel's model of "Lackawanna 1661" has much more legitimacy than the S3 with the Hiawatha paint job or Daylight AC9's and AC12's.

It was 1:1, that means it actually happened. It is not an accurate DL&W locomotive, but is an accurate livery, however, one that only existed briefly.

Sadly there isn't enough Lackawanna steam as I and many others would like there to be. The same goes for matching steam era cabeese. I can't find the Weaver Pocono anywhere. Luckily the legacy mogul's were made with 565 being one of them so there is still some hope for DL&W steam!

Edit- There isn't enough of not only DL&W steam but also the Lehigh Valley. It seems those two roads have the least amount of scale steam. LV ranks with scale camelbacks, and the John Wilkes and Black Diamond pacifics. Lackawanna  has... the Pocono, camelback, Mogul, and now the S3 which I would include in the list. I'd like to see some more of the grunt freight engines that both roads would of used.

Milwaukee Road no. 261 became Lackawanna 1661 for a day in 1995. July 22, for a run to Binghamton, NY on a special called "The Triple Cities." The locomotive was lettered for Lackawanna, but also featured DL&W headlight, marker lamps, bell, air horn and whistle provided by Henry W. Peterson.  Now that this is mentioned, I have an interest in getting the engine myself.  I hadn't given it much thought when the catalog came to my house.
