ok this would be a fantasy train. A lionel scale CV hudson with 4 scale heavy weights. Same scheme as the LCCA tinplate set.

how about a Cardinal red clear coated nyc central train set that carried the pope. it was painted red one day. nobody was certain what locomotive pulled in in 1926 but it was not a CV LOCO. the CV was 10 or 12 years later. i would make this set so cool looking but it would NOT be autentic locomotive wise.

thanks and let's here what you have to say

I read your original post. Real or not a CV is a little to far away for me. If nobody know what loc pulled the real train than you are open to possibilities, but no a loc that was years away from reality, IMHO.

Tim you did know the cardinal was a real train. the CV loco just wasn't around in 1926.

the train itself was real.

thanks

I thought I read somewhere long ago that the train was first pulled by an electric T-2A out of the station then once out of the city the rest of the trip was handled by a K-3 Pacific steam engine.

I know that Lionel didn't make a K-3 Pacific (at least not to my knowledge) but they did to the K-4 Pacific (6-11266) so why not just use that so it closer approximates the Cardinal's train instead of suggesting the Hudson?

As to paint, I don't know if the loco and tender were painted any special color for the event (I would guess they weren't but could very well have been painted red) but I heard that the tender and locomotive wheels and the running boards were all painted an aluminum color.
