The Lionel scale GG1 is perhaps the finest rendition of the prototype in O gauge. It has spoked drive wheels for Pete's sake!

I have heard it can be a little finicky on even O-72 curves, but it seems to be on a case by case basis.

Usually Ross switches have the least amount of problems.

It may be a little bit of a gamble, but I would go for it.

Joe

Linoel scale GG1 is a great engine. Runs great, fantastic sounds and looks fantastic pulling the GGD Congressional passenger cars.

However, purchased mine when it first came out.  At one time there were some owners who had issues with this engine negotiating 072 curves.  My new layout has all GarGraves tracks with all 072 curves and Ross switches.  This engine derails going around 072 curves.  The leading truck's front wheel will jump over the outside rail. I used some shims under the outside rail (ie banking) to minimize this problem.

Hopefully this engine is one of the many GG1s that are ok negotiating 072 curves.  If not, use the shims as suggested above or maybe there is someone on the forum that has a better fix.

Good luck

The Lionel scale GG1 is truly full scale length whereas the MTH and Weaver renditions are slightly short of full scale. A number of 2 rail modelers have had this engine converted from 3 rail by a friend of mine.

I believe Lionel did a beautiful job of capturing the detail on the pilots. The only thing I saw that could have been improved was the fact that on the 5 stripe versions the stripes, once they converged at the ends of the locomotive, did not come as close to the end doors as they should have. Don't know if this was true on the other paint schemes or not.

I love my newly acquired JLC GG-1.  Although it is almost 10 years old, it has aged very well, as it still looks practically Brand New In Box.  It runs great, sounds awesome, and is very much the looker.  The GG-1 pulling the Lionel Scale Congressional Aluminum Passenger Cars looks like a trip back in time to the 1950's. (My Mother and my Grandparents frequently rode the GG-1 & Congressional from D.C. to NYC.)

Curve wise, I posted a thread in 3 Rail Scale about running my GG-1 on O-60 Curves.  I do not understand why forumites are saying that their GG-1 will not run very well on O-72, and yet I can run on O-60 without the GG-1 derailing.  I wish I had Ross/ Gargraves, but for the current layout, I am utilizing Fastrack.  Attached are a couple pixs I took tonight of the GG-1 on my O-60 Reversing Loop.  There isn't any binding, squeaking, rubbing, or trucks jumping the tracks.

My apologies in advance for the not posting shots taken with my HDSLR & Strobes.   These were quickies taken with my iPad Mini and available light.

John, I am pleased that you have had no problems with your GG1s using Lionel modern version 0-72 switches. I remember reading this report form you before when this subject was raised.

All I can do is report on my experience. My Lionel scale GG1 repeatedly derailed on any of the Lionel modern version switches installed on our layout. This has been the only engine I have experienced a problem with these switches. Believe me, if Ross has come our with their tubular 0-72 switches before I purchased the Lionel versions, that is what would be on our layout. At this point I have just too many to replace.
