Hi, Put on the track and no sound. Then sound tried sort of, it went forward and then reverse (no sound). Checked sound switch, it was on, put it back on track and now dead. Any ideas? What solutions do you recommend? It worked flawlessly until now.

Thanks,

Bob

If you tried reprogramming with no effect, usually the next step is to open it up and reseat the boards and look for pinched wires. The boards other than that particular audio board are readily available. No need to replace them all with a rectifier.

Pete,

This loco is pre-TMCC and pre-modular RailSounds. You can't reprogram or re-seat boards on these.

Unfortunately, I'm fairly certain the boards in these are unique, and weren't used elsewhere. Unfortunately, a quick online search didn't find anyone with the boards in stock.

My only advice would be to check all connections going to the board, as well as check the functionality of the speaker.

That engine has a small mabuchi motor. An ERR cruise lite should fit easily. Lionel still has the RS 4 boards for the later WM shay if you wanted correct sounds.

I suspect any small reverse unit would suffice just to return basic operation.  For command operation the ERR CC Lite might be the only alternative that will fit inside.  Anything currently available used to replace the existing sound should be a big improvement over 1992 tech. Maybe Dallee for conventional and ERR for TMCC.  ERR doesn't offer shay specific sounds......hence the Dallee suggestion.

ERR uses a Lionel Radio board so you can use any RS4 board, even RS5 that Lionel will sell you. They still offer the Railsounds board for Western Maryland #6 that came out in the later '90s. The downside is this board also requires a motherboard and audio power board. These fit in the later tender.

The current generation of ERR Railsounds boards are tiny by comparision but you give up the specific sound set for the shay.
