i found an older lionel set from the 70s i really like called the Silver star . i don't usually go for early 70s stuff unless it hits a special spot because i've heard the motors aren't all that great in the fact they burn out really easily and then there is the DC only set. i have one of those DC only sets and i had to retire it because it was unusable for my future plans. The silver star has a really pretty 2-4-2 in a silvery grey color that makes it look almost cybertronian. plus i'm a fan of 2-4-2 engines. my question is if i do come across a silver star set how much should i reasonally pay for one in good condition ?

What is the cab no. - 8141? This was my first set in the early 70s if so. Mighty Sound of Steam!
It looks like a complete set with box is going for around $100/140.00. I think I'd try and stay in the $50/75.00 range. There's nothing really special included in the set.
The nice things about MPC is it's affordable and can be found with the original box most of the time. Those boxes really take me back, especially the set boxes.
I still have my box, typos and all. The front says 'Silver Star' and the side says 'Silver Starr'.
I also have this set. It belonged to a cousin who outgrew trains and gave it to me back in the early 80's. No set box or xformer but we still have it and run it every year during the Holidays. Good looking set and a good example of MPC paint schemes, car color, decor, etc.
The Sound of Steam board has failed a couple of times on us. If you do pick one up, before powering it up, open the tender and apply a layer of foam tape between the board and the chassis. The original foam tape would disintegrate and allow the board to short against the metal. We've also had some capacitors fail over time and need to address those.
If in great condition and complete, I don't think that the 100-140 is out of line.
Good luck,
