Gentlemen

I have the Conrail Lionmaster SD80 (#4120) from the Legacy Diesel Freight Set 6-31772.

Neither the fan or the smoke element work.  Both failed at the same time.

I've had a fan and a smoke unit fail in the past but never both at once.

All other functions of the diesel are fine.

I have checked all wiring and connectors and they seem fine and in place.

Would the problem be in the board on top of the smoke unit?

Would it's failure cause both the fan and the element to fail?

And if the board is at fault.....roughly what does a new board cost?

Thank You

Soo Line

If it were me I'd buy the whole smoke unit, rather than piecemeal it back together and then find another part of the  old unit may be to blame.

Good luck,

UPDATE  with PICS

Please note that I have 3 pics to load but cannot seem to figure out how to do it.

Will continue to try.

Thank You Gents for all the help and responses.

I followed the positive lead from the smoke unit to a small board at the front of the engine.

The small board stands alone and is supported by a small plastic piece screwed to the base of the engine.  Three (3) small metal prongs go from the small plastic piece to the board.
One of the prongs was broken.  It appeared to have been soldered before (not by me).  Probably during several warranty trips to Lionel in the very beginning.
I am the only owner.

I re-soldered the broken prong and put solder on the other two as well.

Now, the smoke unit and fan work.

What is that small board and it's function?
The set up seems somewhat fragile....is there a purpose for this board to be so stand alone?

Thanks again for all the help.

The small board is the smoke regulator board.  The component screwed to the chassis is the smoke level control triac, it's bolted there to provide headsinking as it gets pretty warm in operation.

It's only fragile if you're in there and moving the connected wires.  However, that board happens to be a fairly common failure for smoke issues, I've replaced quite a few of them.

BTW, I didn't see any pictures, but I have the same locomotive.
