I am pretty sure that those cabooses with the mechanical puffing will get too hot if left sitting still, say you're running a TMCC or Legacy or DCS command locomotive and the track voltage is on constantly.  I've heard of those actually melting or warping the plastic body of the caboose.   Have one and I removed the smoke unit just so it can never melt the body.

Many of the K-Line smoking caboose models would melt the body as well, and I suspect the similarly designed Lionel ones too.  I've seen a number of melted cabooses, and there are plenty more pictures on the web of it happening.  Later K-Line and Lionel caboose models had a CONV/CMD switch to adjust the power to the smoke unit for the higher command track voltage.
