Other than an REA shell, can anyone think of a shell for me to put on a Lionel Sound of Steam box car that would be somewhat consistent with what you would find with a group of passenger cars pulled by a steam locomotive? I believe that any 6464 type box car shell would fit.

about 1986 or so Lionel had a Jersey central series which included a trainmaster, a wide vision caboose and a box car. They were all seperate sale items. The box car was green with gold lettering and marked Passenger equipped. In the prototype, such a car would have been used for head end business on a passenger train, It would be appropriate for what you wish to do. You could also use a PRR car with the ball herald. PRR cars were ubiquitous on US railroads in this type of service.

What road name is on the passenger cars???
Pennsylvania, New York Central, New Haven
What's wrong with the REA shell? That's what I used. It looks good between the diesel and passenger cars, or freight cars.
The CNJ sounds like a good idea.
I'm not sure about the Pennsylvania logo that is referred to. I will check that out.
The reason why I don't want to use REA on the sound of steam is because I have that shell on my diesel sound box car.

The first one is an x-29 box with the Ball herald that I had mentioned. This is steam era and these cars could be found at the head end of passenger trains used as mail storage or for RR LCL express.
The second scheme is post WW2 but in the steam era, bit more colorful. These were used in LCL express service and could be at the head end of a steam powered passenger train. This car is a Lionel 6565 box car.
Thanks for the info. I will be on the lookout for the PRR Merchandise box car!
Seems any reefer might work, too.
What, me worry?
I would think the Railway Express that you have is fine for a passenger train.
Would the shell from any of the Lionel milk cars fit on the sound of steam frame? If they fit you have alot of choices that will go with those road names.
