I recently came across the Lionel sound passenger cars and was very impressed. They add another dimension to animation and sound that I know my grand kids and non-railroading friends would find interesting/amazing.
I don't have one yet, but I wonder what others think about these cars and the features. How well are they built and are there any issues one should be aware of.

Each of my Lionel passenger sets (Canadian Pacific, Santa Fe Super Chief, Congressional) have one and I have not had any issues with them. When the train is at the station the sounds are entertaining and add realism but when the train is on the move the sounds are mostly drown out.

Just added price for the car, and Lionel may not being making them anyone.
Lionel has station sound diners in the current catalog, page 70 and beyond of the 2016 Volume 2. The Freedom Train also has sound. No evidence that Lionel is discontinuing sound for passenger cars.
I have one from 2001 and it still operates great and thrills on lookers when run at shows on our club layout. I never see these laying around dealers shops and prices remain fairly stable for purchasing past offerings. I can see no reason Lionel would begin to consider removing these from production as GRJ mentions.
I like them as well, I bought a few of the SS RailSounds boards and I roll my own as I have a lot of MTH passenger sets. 
What I like about the new station sounds diner cars is they have added additional sounds compared to their 18 inch release "brothern"... Listening to them it seems there are improved quality of sound as well.
I'm waiting for the Union Pacific dining sound cars to become available. Then i'll buy the MTH 5 car Union Pacific Premier 5 car set. I'll hook them up to my JLC Big Boy with Legacy or Vision Challenger.
