Thanks everyone for getting back to me so quickly. Looks like the subject was closed before I could respond with pictures as the subject was going off track so let's keep this one on track!

Here are the backs of my two tenders. The paint is beginning to blister and crack on one of them. Hopefully the previous poster is correct that they were to lazy to clean the casting to smooth areas out and maybe the paint is cracking due to not cleaning the casting well prior to the application of the paint.

The rough spots between the two castings are not consistent so not sure how they would have come out of the mold with these rough spots not being the same if the mold die was damaged.

You can see in the second photo of the back of the tender 4th rivet down from back up light the paint has bubbled and is actually cracked.

Looks like the metal has a bad case of psoriasis!

This may not help @macdaddy , but at least you'll know you're not alone.

My standard gauge Lionel CV tender has the same problem, although not to the same extent. Only the die cast back end of the tender shroud is affected See below -

More interesting is that my standard gauge LCT (MTH) Blue Comet 400E tender has the same problem over it's entire body, as shown here -

I've had both of these engines since new, so I know that this is how they were delivered from their manufacturers.  The paintwork on both engines is flawless. Neither tender shows any cracking and both have proven to be structurally sound. I used to attribute the rough finish to faulty paint work. Now I realize something else must be at play here, but what I don't know.
