Service alert for Lionel subway trains. If you were running the full six car set, these trains are quite heavy. If you notice when the subway starts to takeoff it shutters a second, this is a sign. One of the motors is starting to fail. The easiest way to check is the place the power unit on its side and hook up power to it then as you slowly accelerate watch the trucks the truck that hesitates is the one with the motor that is going bad. Just had one go bad and I am now waiting on a motor replacement from Lionel. While you have these cars open put a TVS in to protect the electronics. You will have to put a TVS in every subway car as they all draw power from the mainline and have an electronic board in each car.

A low-tech thing to do that may lessen the load on the motors is to lightly oil all the wheel and pickup bearings from time to time. I found it made a significant difference even with a four car set.

Very true, but they are very heavy…….
Yes, they are, and I wonder if Lionel was too optimistic in its motor design, especially if it really expected users to run 6 car trains. Pulling just three cars feels like a significant load, never mind 5 cars, and curves and inclines make the load even worse. I'm not implying that you worked them too hard, but maybe Lionel should have cautioned users about running them too fast or too hard. Your experience should be a red flag for all Lionel subway users to dial back on how hard they run their subways.
