Thanks to all of the great advice I have received so far, I have decided to get an LW trainmaster transformer, or an SW transformer, for the primary purpose of running two trains (only about 5 cars each), on the same track.

First off, I have extensive experience with the SW transformer, thanks to the fact that my idiot father ( a Doctor) ran out and bought me a Super-O set for Christmas when I was 10 years old.  I was never able to expand that oval much, due to the fact that a single manual switch cost $18  and an electric switch was  $25 (in 1966 dollars!)  My Dad, knowing nothing about trains, just ran to the train store on Christmas Eve, and told the salesman that he wanted the biggest and best.  ( After that, he had his neighbor set if up for me on a sheet of plywood, and then he was done with the whole thing.  Thanks Dad.)

The SW transformer looked both modern, cool, and retro, all of the same time.  But dang, that thing was really really loud!  It made a buzzing sound (like you hear in movies for electric chair executions) whenever you turned it on, or reversed directions.  That green light in the center was really neat though.  

Maybe the LW does the same?


I guess that the SW, since it has two throttles, would be more flexible, since I could run a separate track line off of it.  But dang, that SW is obnoxious sounding.

So, which would you recommend?  They seem to cost about the same in VG condition.

Couple things-

1. An SW (or any other Lionel transformer) should be silent, or at least not objectionably noisy. If it is noisy, it has a problem.

2. I never cared for the SW. Yes, it has two throttles, but only one with a whistle and no separate direction controls. The fact that the two throttles work in opposite directions doesn't help either.

I'd prefer a pair of 1033s or a pair of LWs if I needed two throttles.

Or, if you want to move into the 21st century, go with the MTH Z-1000. Not PW, but, feature/power-wise, it is equal to the LW. 

It isn't such a big deal. Transformers are so cheap, try one, if you don't like it try a different one!

The LW only has one throttle, so you would need two if you want independent control of two trains. The SW has two throttles already.  The LW has 125 watts for one train, the SW has 130 watts, but that is shared between the two throttles. I don’t have an SW to listen to, my LW is quiet.

Buzzing is almost normal, usually a wedge of cardboard or something can stop it (right out of old Lionel tips in some book(let).  Also silicone.  Its usually the transformer plates or mount. It's volume usually varies with heat build ups or heavy loads.

The vibration is at 60hz (ac cycles per secon) same an an e-unit or many other buzzy items.  Same as you're home ac, we just lower volts, the hertz stay the same.

Two trains at once, two throttles. (Unless you use command)

The B throttle can have a whistle control added externally.

The LW dial lights up... awsome. If you like the little SW lamp, you ain't seen the LW at night.

Two LWs, Then the SW. if you can't swing a KW/VW.

Two LW over KW/VW.... now I'm torn. Loosing the KW/VW up to 180w at one throttle or splitable vs LW 125w lower max peaks and "spacey" dial glow. That's tough.

Forgot to mention, that my SW transformer was really really loud right out of the box.

You guys have raised some great points.  I had totally forgotten that the two SW throttles run in in opposite directions.  I remember now that when I used it on another set, that was a totally pain in the butt.   

Someone said that the SW was really "Star Treky" in appearance.  I agree, but with those big triangular arrows in the dials, and the dark lime-green glowing light, it was more Klingon than Federation.

I going for the LW.  It seems to be the safest way to go.
