JOhn,
Here's a link to the Manual at Lionel
There's a jumper plug in the cab you need to move from one position to the other to unlock it from one direction only
Changing directions is the function of the E-Unit. If that isn't advancing with power cycles, that's your problem. As I recall, this unit has a plug in the cab that has two sockets you can connect to, one enables the reversing unit.

LOL John, did you not read my reply a few minutes before yours?
Here is the link to Supplement 16 that covers this engine. Starts on page 14. Looks like a mechanical e Unit so troubleshooting it should be straight forward.
Follow the advice of David and see if the jumper is correct. Make sure the e unit is cycling. If so check the fingers and the drum on the e unit. Make sure they are clean and intact.
David,John, Marty. Thankyou. When I took it apartI must have plugged it into he 1 direction. John
I have one if these also.
Hmmm. Would this be a good engine to upgrade with ERR ac commander? Is it "worth" the effort?
I upgraded two of these that had a Timko can motor upgrade and an MTH smoke unit. Cruise, RailSounds, Super-Chuffer & Chuff-Generator, good lookin' units.

Yup, I have the Reading version. Switching the jumper was exactly what I was going to say.
looks like i need a replacement for mechanical e unit. when I put the plug in forward only .It works fine. When I switch the jumper it runs when given alot of voltage. then it seems to bind up and stops John

Something doesn’t seem right, an e unit will not cause the drive mechanism to bind up.....here’s one tip with these 90’s model CSS’s Mohawks, T1’s and the Texas Mohawk. .....Lionel greased these things with a grease that’s known to dry up over time and literally turn to rocks......might want to take the gear box cover off and look around....it may need to be cleaned out & re-greased.....

I'm with Pat on this one. Been down this road before. Pull the motor. Then clean and regrease the bearings on BOTH ends of the armature. I'm partial the Red-n-Tacky, but that's me. Clean, check, and regrease the gear box while you have it apart.

I'm thinking something else. If I remember there was a problem with the backlash and the armature would bind against the brushplate in one direction. Check to see if the armature is rubbing the brushplate. Some spacer washers will take care of the problem if so.

Might can be that Chuck, ...ought to be easy for the OP to spot with out taking the motor apart yet, .....he should see the brushes tryin to jump up out the wells like bulging eye balls......no??...
