If buying new I'd skip TMCC. It's older and if you buy any Legacy locomotives you won't get all the features to work. The Legacy system is pricey but you can get the cheaper CAB-1L/Base-1L for around $250:

You'll probably be better off going this route unless you're on a tight budget. You can find used TMCC bases and CAB-1s for around $100 but you're getting old equipment that has no warranty.

Get a Lionel 6-34120 TMCC Direct Lockon for a fast circuit breaker for your ZW.  (There are many threads on fast circuit breakers on the forum.  This Lionel part is off the shelf and works well).

For your first Legacy engine, buy one that has Bluetooth (recent manufacture) and use the Lionel app to control it.  Lionel's Apple app will run on any iPad from the original to the most recent so if you need to get an apple device, you can get an older model at a bargain price.

The app has a subset of Legacy features available and gets you started without immediately investing in the full Legacy system.

Does the Cab-1L access any more Legacy features than a TMCC Cab-1?
