I hooked up a Lionel Train Orders Building to my layout about 8 months ago. I purchased it on 11/22/10. Took me a while to hook it up on my layout as I was in the process of constructing it. I used Lionel Fastracks for my layout. Using the Activator Track to hook up into the Orders Building Switch Terminals. Thinking that this was working; after quit a while I discovered that the train wasn't activating the Orders Building; that it was running continuously all the time. Just the other night the man with the orders stopped coming out. It like froze up. But yet I can still hear the gears grinding. But the man doesn't move. I sent a message to the dealer I bought it from any they suggested that I send it to Lionel for repair. (Which I'm going to call them in the morning.) Now, my question is; the instructions to it says that you should us a 12 volt DC Really SPDT 1A Contact Rating. I'm changing my hook up to a Lionel 153I Controller to activate the Orders Building when I get it back from Lionel. Because it will be a little closer to the Train Orders Building; and running in the right direction. I had to put the Activator Track in the opposite direction, because I didn't have enough room in the section before the Orders Building. Where as I already have a 153I hooked up to a signal light. What are people using in place of this relay, if it can't be found any place???? I Google Searched Radio Shack and they don't even list one???? Thanks for looking at my problem. TT
Hi TT,
It's funny and coincidental......I was working on my Train Orders Building this afternoon and just happened to find this thread tonight. I got mine about a year ago and it was problematic right out of the box (a problem I have with almost every Lionel accessory I buy). Very bad quality control. I generally put in alot of time making modifications and jury rigging and eventually get things working. Once they work, they are lots of fun.
Anyway, with mine, I used a RadioShack Mini Relay......275-248....it's 10 amp but otherwise the specs are the same. You can find 1 amp ones on their website. I connected it to a diode and then to an MTH Infra Red Itad. The circuitry works fine.....the building itself didn't. Right off the bat, the flag guy smashed into the back of the door and broke off the flag pole and jammed the gears. I had to fabricate a new pole and flag (very close to the original). The problem was, the original flagpole was too long and hit the door as it tried to open.....jamming everything. Got it working reasonably well, but today I decided it was time to fine tune it. The nylon gear that the bottom of the door attaches to jumps teeth on the neighboring gear and the thing will jam. Took it apart and worked on the gear and I think I've solved it (famous last words). Then I discovered that because the roof was upside down when I was working on it, I broke off one of the semaphore arms. Had to fabricate a new one tonight out of plastic from an old lock-on. It will look fine.
Good luck hooking yours up if you haven't done so already. It would be nice if Lionel paid more attention to their quality control so these kinds of things would work as they should....out of the box.
