hey fellas,

I'm filming a review for a Lionel Southern GP9 and I noticed that under the road number it says "G.5.&F.", which is supposed to denote the Georgia Southern & Florida Railway. I'm pretty sure this is a China-related typo where they used a "5" instead and an "S", and that it should be "G.S.&F.". However, before I point it out in the video I wanted to check with the forum and make sure that is in fact a typo. I'm not an expert on the G.S.&F. so just want to be on the safe side and ask first. If this had already been discussed previously, my apologies.

Thanks,

Eric Siegel

Chalk up another one to "Nortern", Backwards NS logo, "Merrmac", etc....

Does the A and H shown in the pics above make sense, or is one of those a typo too?  I could easily see an A and H being mixed up is they confused a S and a 5.

(and that J 612 shown is way over the top - dare I ask what model that is?  I want to make sure I steer clear of ever considering one of those in the future)

Can you just skip that part of the review Eric? I clearly think that it is a typo

IMO, product reviews shouldn't just be glowing praise and ignoring the issues where they may be present. One of my pet peeves with the magazine reviews. Never a critical word about anything - everything is wonderful and problem free.

Have you asked Lionel about it?  They'd be the only ones to tell you if it's a typo or if it was done on purpose.

Now if you want to know if it's prototypical, then the forum would be a good place to ask.

If typo meant a single factory error, it might make sense to not focus on it, but it would seem they are all that way (across the board defect, until someone shows us a correct one), this is not "some one picked up a 5 instead of an S for one model".

If it was me, I'd ask for a new shell or return it.

When the MTH H10s came last year with an I1 builders plate, i let MTH know that I realized it was a mistake but I wasn't going to keep an inaccurate locomotive. It took them almost a year to do it, but i received replacement builders plates and changed my status to 100% satisfied.

Its the Lionel legacy seperate sale class J  61S item #6-11414 released in 2013.

These also had a bonus error where the cab sits too low on the chassis and the loco pinstripe doesn't line up with the one on the tender.

Some folks added washers under the cab end of the shell to raise it up and fix the alignment.

Thanks for the heads up.  I recall the discussion about the stripe not lining up, but somehow I forgot about the lettering.  There were 2 Legacy scale J's, right?  I'll make sure to avoid this one if I seek one out in the future.

That's a Chinese S

I suppose no one wants to go to China since Mike is gone.

RickO posted:

Thats because in china  the letter "S" is typically reversed and used as the number 2

Well, it's better than , I suppose. (I think that's the Chinese number for 5)

I hope you guys were joking, as 99% of this sort of error occurs stateside.

Also add to the MTH product list "Road of Antracite that were on their Railking Reading Blue Mountain and Northern hoppers.

My personal favorite in this cavalcade of errors is the "Huckleberry Fin" (as in shark's) car name on the recent Legacy Mark Twain Zephyr. Oh, and everybody knows that "Bucyrus Eric" on the Legacy crane is in honor of the hobby's leading reviewer. Presumably nobody spotted either on the production samples, if there were any (that were looked at).

Definitely not prototypical.

The biggest non-prototypical area for the Lionel model is the fuel tank. These had 800 gallon "branch line" tanks rather than the 1300-1600 gallon large tanks underneath. Not sure if Eric will cover that in his review or not. Lettering can be fixed, the fuel tank is another matter.

I found this typo earlier today on another newly released product while browsing my local hobby shop.  It's from the 6-82845 B&O Tractor & Trailer set.  The word 'coordinated' is spelled wrong as seen below.  I was looking at purchasing this truck but think I will pass.  Also, I just checked the Lionel site and the original catalog picture on there also has it spelled wrong.  I guess they don't have a proof-reader before the catalog is printed and stuff goes into production (and yes, I know MTH and other manufacturers have goofed on occasion when it comes to spelling).

No telling. Reasons could vary from being busy with whatever his new plans are, to holidays, to respectful or contractual refrains from taking part in or commenting on the industry, to simply taking a break on his own accord.

I'm sure we will know a bit more when the timing is right for him.

Merry Christmas if you are reading Mike.

Where did mike go? I haven't been on the boards lately

Probably right around when you took your break from posting, there was news that he is no longer with Lionel.  (I forget the exact date, but it was a Monday a week or 2 after York, I believe)

Wherever he may be or his future plans, it's probably quite safe to assume he will not be chiming in on any threads like this since he no longer represents Lionel.
