Just plopped my Christmas present on the track, but typical Lionel, its brand new and BROKEN. The item in question comes from the 6-38354 Union Pacific set. The motor runs like a champ, but any resistance provided to the drive wheels cause them to stop being driven by the motor. I opened it up and it seems like the gold colored gear in my photo will slip on the axle if pressure is applied to it.

Never seen this problem before... any ideas? Thanks!

This can't be!

Someone posted in the 2019 catalog thread that all these defective item complaints are false.

So frustrating! I have been buying Lionel since I was a kid, but  I can't keep throwing my money away. I don't live near a service center and I'm sick of PAYING to ship their broken stuff back to them.

You can try some RED Loctite to see if it will stay in position. You will really need to clear out any lubricants first (and re-apply after the Loctite sets). I guess JB weld would be another option as well, but I have not personally tried that one in a similar scenario.

Can you pull the wheels off the axle to slide it out of the truck?

If that gear is loose, simply nudge it to one side. Apply the Loctite where the gear SHOULD rest. Re-position the gear, clean up any excess goop and let it set and work it's magic. No need to remove a wheel and axle, but that is possible; However, you can't attach the gear in question outside of the truck frame.

If that doesn't work, you can always try to get a replacement truck (630-8355-770), but Lionel says they are no longer available.

It is ironic that the worm wheel is slipping, when everything else gets cranked down so tight by the Chinese that you can’t take it apart. Having serviced these locos which also includes the remake of Rock Island Alco set, I would strongly discourage any attempt to pull the wheels. Even with the proper wheel pullers, you will break off a wheel flange if you apply the extraordinary force necessary to remove these wheels from their axles. These wheels take 10x the force to remove compared to postwar or modern era US produced equipment. If you can clean out the lubricant and degrease everything, a drop or two of crazy glue is usually quite enough for the worm wheel to catch on the axle.
