The shell is very easy to take off, can’t say how easy it’ll be to remove everything else in order to strip it. Personally I wouldn’t go through all that but it’s your model
Dave’s engineering sample looks like it is metal (and, as far as I know, all the Pilot engines Lionel issued were also metal steamers). Aren’t the new Verandas plastic??? If you want that metal look on a plastic shell, I think you could just spray paint over the existing shell. As a Pennsy Fan, I find the thought close to sacrilege
