Seeing as we were a big weaver dealer for years...I've tried to stay with it and have been ordering the LionelScale cars, which are the former weaver cars.  Have some 40' and 50' box cars, SPFE and UPFE  57' mechanical reefers, and a few 3 bay hopper cars.

But the news is that they have yet to produce the Wood Chip hopper cars and the 50' flat cars.  They were cataloged in 2017 or 2018???  We were able to order a bunch of each, and will have them up for pre-order shortly. We will sell them individually, as most ppl dont need 6 of any one thing.   50' flat cars are no big deal, really, but the wood chip hoppers were very popular, and were only run twice by Weaver, right before they closed.   Have no idea when they will actually arrive....but at least we have them on order...

The woodchip cars are in Portland terminal (Maine Central) ,  Chessie, Western Maryland, and GM&O.    IDK who picks roads for Lionel, but I could do a lot better...   Southern, ACL, SAL, would have been good choices...IMHO

Also, I'd sell the 6 car sets, but its hard to get ppl out of their old buying habits, and to order Lionel from us, instead oi the "Big Boys"   I'll put some 6 car sels up for pre-order....

Gotta get orders that are here shipped 1st....

Hi Beth....I tried calling Lionel about the Union Pacfic 4 bay High side hoppers, but the gal I talked  to really didn't know what I was referring to. I can't seem to find the catalogues on lionel site to get number  Weaver code was U4902. I think the shipping day as been postponed three times now, I would prefer the Weaver but they all disappeared except the five I have.

I sent u an email just now...but here's the answer again.

Im going to try to get some from Lionel this afternoon.  They are pretty iompossible to deal with, but I might get an answer in a day.

I do have 1 of them here..Weaver 4 bay UP  road # 18500.  31.95 plastic tks. 49.95 diecast tks.

I can send u a Paypal invoice if u want....

Its also a "traditional" car  (ex- Lionel 6446 quad hopper), and I'm trying to stick only with the full scale stuff.  Been working on getting Lionel stuff today...Seems they are behind on shipping a lot of things...especially the Lionscale made in NC.  So I'm putting in orders and waiting for a reply...............................................................................................

The first generation of wood chip hoppers were kits, I think in the nineties. I was talking to Joe about them, but I can't remember for sure.

Yes, they were.  We have some of those kits here, but I never put them up for sale.   Actually all the "Quality Craft Models" old O gauge cars were kits.  Some, like Athern kits, were simple snap together kinda kits.  The Sand hoppers and the woodchip hoppers were more involved.  Have about a dozen of the old sand hoppers here too. haha.

Beth, were there any of the wood chip cars offered in Southern?   I just ordered a set of 6, 9 panel hoppers in LionScale.  If they are going to have 6 road numbers I think some sets should be sold.  Ive seen Southern wood chip trains 50 or more cars long!

Jim

Jim, you may be interested in some wood chip cars made by MTH in Southern livery. They are quite big though. The smaller hopper is a Weaver shell without the stacked sides that I used for making loads.

Those may be a bit modern.  The hoppers I just got show build dates in the 50s.   If you have that car can you check the "build" date?

I don't have this car, a friend sent it to me to use as a template for making loads. I'm sure a search on the MTH web site would have the build date info. The wood chip industry, at least according to my research, started in the 60's. Of course, hoppers were used, and modified because of availability, and eventually, boxcars and other rolling stock were modified for wood chip service. I believe the MTH car prototype was built specifically for wood chip use. A member on another forum modified the MTH car, (which as far as I know, was only produced in Southern livery), and customized for another road which I can't recall. If you have any Southern 2 bay hoppers, perhaps you can get the kits from Beth and add the stack. Or, you could make a stack from styrene. The Weaver stacks were attached using CA cement.

MTH made the wood  chip cars in 1998/99, 2003, and 2015.  Last run was 3 cars sets...made in MRL, Southern, SP, and Chessie.  These cars were never very popular, and probably not many made.  With the decimation of the paper making business in this country, the few paper mills left, probably have chipping plants near the paper mills, and use conveyors to get chips to the pulping vats.   The cars were usually used in captive service to get chips from a chipping plant to a paper plant.  The only ones ive seen have been in M/W service, scrap service, cotton/cotton seed service, or some other lightweight material.

I can check the MTH current stock online, and see if they have any, but I doubt it.  I have ! SP and 1 Santa Fe in stock...if your in the repainting mood....

beth

I have no idea if those roads had 2 bay hoppers.  It was just a starting place.  I cud look it up, but no time, and no reason at this point.  I jst know they are down in woodpulp country.  I'd put my money on IC and ICG, but whatever.   Not that I'd ever accuse Lionel of only making cars that really existed.    And some modelers care, and some dont.  I like doing cars that are at least close to something that actually existed.  (We've done 60 some odd different special run cars so far)

FWIW

Screenshot_20190215-034832_Chrome~01If you decide to sell a few Solid Gold, Real Colds , I'm in for buying one.

Unfortunate that manufacturers do not respond or listen to suggested products, but simply foolish to ignore custom runs.

While on the topic, here is a tank car I would buy,  and I know of others that would.  Maybe Atlas?

Your Tank Car did not show up.

What is the road name, company name, reporting marks and number?

It was not attaching, so I had to redo the post.  UTLX, 13,600  gallon acid tank. Screenshot_20190215-042114_Chrome~01

Atlas made a maroon and white acid tank car SHPX similar to this pic of an RCRX.

Beth, didnt mean to derail the topic from your original woodchip weaver topic.
