I just picked up a Lionel ZW-L. It is used but appears to be in very good condition. However, I’ve taken down my layout and have no way to test it. I may not have a layout until sometime next year.
So, how to test it so I don’t end up with a very expensive door stop.

Put a couple of pieces of track together hook them up to the a, b,c and d terminals one at a time ,put a locomotive on the track and try the direction and whistle buttons

You need a true RMS volt meter to check you're ZW-L. Otherwise you won't get a accurate reading as these transformers put out a chopped sine wave. Klein Tools makes one that's not to pricey. Also put a load on it. I used a small sealed beam head light.
