Yes,

Dont know if the "hot" has anything to do with it.

It is very similiar smell to the williams smoke fluid.

Several months ago i ran out of Jts, While waiting for my order to come i stopped and bought some williams at my LHS so at least to have something. I spent 3 hours looking for wire burning , only to finally figure out it was  the smoke fluid.

A while back I accidentally melted the plastic smoke unit in my first Lionel 4-4-2 set. Set it on max voltage in neutral for a photo; big mistake. The odor of the burnt plastic was pretty pungent and it took me a while to get the smell out of the shell. I just now replaced it and when I got a similar smell from the new fluid I almost threw the train across the room because I thought I melted it again, lol

Good to know others have experienced the same thing. I think I'll give in and track down some megasteam.

I remember people reporting better smoke output on Legacy engines with the premium fluid. This was a couple months ago. I think that was the main reason people were giving it a try. Don't remember anything about bad smell then. Maybe it doesn't age well?

I think folks are "nit picking" about the smoke fluid. IMO the newest legacy smoke units make plenty of smoke on the lowest setting no matter what the fluid brand is, same goes for MTH (of course).Maybe we need fluid that produces 1:48 cinders as well
