I don't exactly know. They refer to it as UV Printing.

Very interesting video. Is this the way the cars will all be printed. Will the pad printing machines from Weaver still be used. Watching the printing process it seems rather slow in respect to how many an hour can be done. I am just glad that the tooling is being used again ...Paul

It appears to be an inkjet printer.
I would guess the UV light sets or solidifies the ink.

This is definitely a UV printer. The inks are specifically designed to cure instantly under UV light. Remember this is test printing that is being done in NC with a bench top UV printer. This scales up to a larger machine come production time as seen in this video:
Gives new meaning to the phrase 'like watching paint dry'.

Does anyone know why the snowflakes were applied (printed?) separately on the Coke cars?
The road number font is wrong for D&RGW, but correct for CONRAIL.
Why did somebody use the CONRAIL font for the road numbers?
