I find MTH's RailKing unpainted seated figures to be the best fit for the majority of passenger cars with interiors! Wish they came painted as they're ideal. Wish MTH would post the scale of them. BTW, has anyonbe measured them and approximated their scale?
These are NOT O scale. The standing male passenger is about 5 feet tall. I am in the process of painting an entire RK set.
That's quite an assembly line method you've created for painting them. A few questions for you: What diameter rods are holding the figures, how are figures attached to the rods so they won't move around as you brush the paint on them, what type paint are you using?
Thanks.

The people are "sitting" on round toothpicks. I leave the rest to your imagination.
I use Craftsmart Acrylic flat paints.

Whew! That helps a little> Worried they might be the pointy ones.
Golden Gate Little People gets you half again the number of passengers, usually for a couple bucks less than the Lionel offering. The size of the two figure sets are similar.
I was a big fan of the RMT 50 (or was it 60?) pack of people for about $40 bucks. That was enough to fill a passenger train for me.
Since the RMT people have been out of production, I've used a combination of MTH people and Lionel "scale" people that Bill posted about and included photos of, above. They look great together.
Then again, I also really like silhouettes.......
I found the RMT people to be too big for most cars passenger seats, I still have several packages of them. I occasionally find a place they'll fit and I use a few.
we used the Lionel pack and this offering from MTH:
They both fit well in out RailKing seats.
We also tried these from Amazon:
The first set looks ok, but only half would sit well into the seats. For the second set, the people look pretty scary and not that well painted, but almost all fit well into the seats. I placed these usually on interior seats, and reserved the Lionel and MTH figures for the windows and in the vista domes.
Prefer the Lionel/MTH offerings, but they are pricey if you have a lot of passenger cars. (and I'm frugal like John...)
Cannot find the figures on the Lionel site. Does anyone have a part# or search reference? Thanks!

Here are my Little people installed in my CZ WP Dome/Observation car.
For me, the Golden Gate/ 3rd Rail people are the best. My RR is settled on 1950 as it's year of operation and GG's 1940 - 1950 figures do fit that bill. And they are inexpensive; usually less than $1 a piece in sets. Can't go wrong with them. I've even fit some into my motor vehicles as both drivers and passengers. The little people didn't need their feet and legs, anyway. Also have some sitting around at various stations, waiting for their trains, which never seem to arrive.

The Golden Gate people do not sit upright enough & I also had to grind the backsides more flat. Kinda disappointed that they are not upright enough. Thought the Beep People were about the best although the Lionel people fit in very well.
I use the Chinese figures if I can find them in the correct size. When the passenger car is rolling by, the $5/ea figures are a waste of money, the 25 cent ones do the job fine.
I just finished my sixty-sixth Preiser #65602 24-Pack of Seated 1/45 People. (66 X 24 = 1,584 seated people painted so far.) Having recently retired, I have the time to paint these figures.
I like the 65602 figures because the people's poses allow for grouping them in the Lionel and Atlas O passenger cars in real conversations, not starring straight forward. To lower the figures, I use a battery-charged Dremel Tool with sanding drum to grind-down one-half of the butts of the figures. The cleaned white plastic allows the glue to adhere better to the tan painted seats.
I spend the time and money because the passenger cars pass in front of my control table by the Double and Single 40" Pratt Bridges, and I can see clearly into each car. I already spent money for the passenger cars, why would I want to slap Zombie Figures in the cars?
One 65602 Preiser Unpainted set for $37.00 makes five different Preiser factory painted sets that retail for close to $175.00 plus shipping, and these five sets are not available at this time and listed as discontinued.
We each have are own model railroad priorities. I am modeling in "Detailed - 3-D", detailing with people and furniture inside my illuminated buildings and passenger cars. Looking at the surface of my layout, leads the viewer into the activity inside each building and car.

Here are a few RailKing figures from the set. I intend to add only one or two colors for clothing. Since once they are installed in a passenger car not a lot of detail is necessary.
Very basic paint schemes shown. Figures are mounted on toothpicks for painting purposes. Some standing poses also shown.
Reminds me of Vlad the Impaler, of whom the legend of Count Dracula comes from:
