LIVE STEAM ACTION IN DISNEY//PHOTOS AND VIDEOS

Alex, glad you enjoyed Disney World and their steam train. I have always enjoyed it myself a few times, but never knew it ran on diesel fuel. Did you get to visit Germany in Epcot and the great outdoor train setup and village they have?

Yes, Disney World's engines run on diesel fuel. I believe Disneyland's locos run on biodiesel. Did you do the "Magic Behind Our Steam Trains Tour"?

In 2007 they tried Biodiesel but had issues with it. In early 2009 however they switched to using recycled cooking oil from the parks eateries. I don't remember all the details on it since it's been a while since I've worked anywhere near the roundhouse but i think it was storage issues with the biodiesel, not the actual use in the locomotives.

Love the Disney Railroad! I took the behind the magic tour and the conductor let me signal the engineer to start the train. I've made many trips around the park on that train and loved every minute of it! Thanks for posting Alex.

JoeG thanks for the info, I agree with you 100 percent it's  extremely hot here, and the humidity is at it's high. It's even hard to breath here. we always come to Disney in the winter, but this time we went with 20 friends and family, we always go with them on vacation in the summer. This time it was florida.

On a side note. Outside the roundhouse backstage there is a locomotive boiler sitting just outside the doors. I have been told that this was the last boiler that Walt sat behind before he died. I don't recall which locomotive it was from, but it's a nice piece of history.

The behind the scenes tour is good (while mine didn't end perfectly, as we had to take an SUV back to Main St(equipment problems), I'd still consider doing it again). 

 

It starts way before park opening, so maybe next time the bosses will reconsider!    I think you maybe only overlap an hour or hour and 1/2 over normal park hours.

 

There's another train in Animal Kingdom, but it's apparently not a real steam train (so as to not expose the animals to the necessary components of steam travel).

There are other books that are pretty good too, but they are for Disneyland specific engines/history.

 

One is "Welcome Aboard the Disneyland Railroad!", another is "From Plantation to Theme Park: The Story of Disneyland Railroad Locomotive No. 5, the Ward Kimball".

 

Both are by Steve DeGaetano, who I believe posts here quite a bit.

 

Based on my brief search on Amazon I imagine the first one is out of print and hard to find for sale.  It looks like the second one is available at resonable prices.

 

I've not yet finished reading, but I've enjoyed both of them.

Thanks for posting the pics and video!! Those are some really beautiful trains. The sound on those steamers sounds pretty prototypical. I guess they got the recording done perfectly. Lol!!! Just kidding!!

It's really great that Disney preserves these Steam Engines and maintains and uses them on a daily basis. They are such beautiful pieces of machinery.
