I have an old Atlas O NJT ALP44 locomotive 3 rail and was curious to see if I would be able to run it on a DCS/Legacy equipped layout. I have the Locomatic box but to be honest I have no experience with it at all as when it first came out in 1999 as I was not involved in O scale trains yet. Is that locomatic sound system compatible with a DCS/Legacy layout? Meaning would I be able to run the engine or would I need to modify something? I know the sounds are primitive compared to today's technology but I am curious to know what would be the best option. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

I believe they don't play well with DCS, the Locomatic kills the DCS signal on the tracks.
I see. Is there a way to just run the engine on a command control layout or is it still technically a conventional engine?
You can run it with the Locomatic controller, but as I recall, that controller has to control the track power.
Ok got it thanks so much! So I presume it would need to be modified like with an AC commander board for standard cab 1 mode digital operation on an all command control layout. Of course that would eliminate the locomatic system though.
Actually, I believe those have a DC motor, so you'd likely want the ERR Cruise Commander for that one. You can add the ERR RailSounds commander and have sound.
Okay great now would I be able to control it with both a legacy remote and a DCS remote with the ERR Cruise commander?
To use the DCS remote, you need a Lionel Command Base cabled to the TIU. You can use any TMCC or Legacy command base for the job.
Excellent I plan on getting a Lionel Legacy System in the future so that should be great. Lastly with the ERR system, that would connect to the existing sound system making the locomatic obsolete? Also could you do the ERR installation if I sent the engine out to you?
You can't use anything of the Locomatic system, sound or control. This would be a complete rework.
I do upgrades, but it'll be in the New Year before I take any more work.
Ok great I will be in touch. I would most definitely want an upgrade for the ALP44 as I am most likely going to be running an all DCS/Legacy layout in the future. I very much appreciate your help and knowledgeable info. Thanks again!
