I have an SD40-2 #20-2669-1
The battery is run down, How do I check to see if it is a bad battery or bad charging system ? I only want to take this apart one time. Thanks

This is a 10 year old locomotive, have a new 3V battery available when you take it apart. It's time to replace it in any case.
Thanks. Is there a way of checking the charging system ? Im going to train shop tomorrow, i'll get new batteries.

I do it the lazy man's method, I use a supercap battery eliminator. If it charges that in a minute or two, the charging circuit works. If it doesn't, the charging circuit doesn't work. 
Get a BCR and you'll never have battery problems again.
Took ten years for this one out of 6 to fail.
