I'm looking to design and 3D print chassis and would like to know if there's a source for drawings or measurements that I can reference for dimensions.  Specifically, I'd like to start with EMD F units, and get the distance between the I beams.  Everything else I can basically glean from using OTS parts, such as P&D trucks and Lionel fuel tanks.

This should make my 2R conversions easier.

Thanks,

Mario

Generally, but not specific to any given loco:
Check the library for the Kalmbach book.  You'll want Volume 2 for the diesels.  More than once I've been able to access the book this way.  Or you might dig around and see if Mainline Modeler ever did drawings for the F units.

In my experience with the Model Railroad Cyclopedia, section drawings through frames are relatively rare.  There is usually a plan, one side elevation, and the front and rear elevations.  Mainline Modeler often included sections through the frame.  If you belong to the MR site, you can search the magazine index for back issues.

Specifically for the F units:
Canadian Pacific (or their historical society) have a site called CPTracks.ca which has a document library.  You will need to register an account to gain access to the drawings, but it is free and worthwhile given the amount of info available there.  Also, the use license includes the types of modeling that we do.

They have a EMD frame drawing for an F9.  It will tell you everything you need to know, and more.  You'll also find similar kinds of drawings for other locos.  It's a great resource.

Cheers,
Jim
