In the clip below about the making of the film they mention building the two locomotives from scratch. Haven't see what is the status of them now after the filming. Would hope that someone had the sense to save them for possible future use and that they used CGG for the wrecks in the movie!

Too bad some of these filmakers don't have a passion for restoring real steam locomotives for public or private use. Imagine having $250 million to spend on No 611 and a few others!

I was wondering about that, too!  From what I've seen, the "Constitution" engine only (no tender) was around for at least the premiere that was held in Disneyland a few weeks ago, as that was the centerpiece for the stage where they introduced the actors.

It still amazes me that they built those engines from steel and from the ground up!  Even the locomotives in the "Heck on Wheels" series are made from wood and heavy cardboard, save for the wheels!

I certainly hope the Lone Ranger locomotives are in storage somewhere, as well.

Correct. They are NOT real STEAM LOCOMOTIVES!

It is correct that they could not run under their own power.....but there is a documentary on Youtube that shows they did actually smoke out the stack, steam out of the cylinders and the whistle worked as it should.  It also showed how the locos where built to run 45-50 mph....they had sprung drivers and they were equalized like a real loco. They just skipped the steam part and thus avoided all the danger and regulations that come with it. Pretty cool locos that I too hope got saved in some form. But some parts were borrowed and had to be returned....so doubtful they were.
