Looking for a Lionel Legacy steam w/whistle steam

I don't know your budget or the size of your curves, but the Legacy 2-6-6-2 can be found in the $800 to $1000 range. You may also be able to find a Santa Fe Northern in the same range.

I do not think you will find much available in that price range with whistle steam, like you said  the Atlantic or lionmaster T1 or if you can find one of the last catloged  lionmaster Union Pacific Big Boy had it. Good luck in your find thats the fun part the Hunt

You'll be hard pressed to find anything else in the $600 range with whistle steam. I think the E6 was the least expensive engine with whistle steam. 

 

I have seen the Santa Fe Northern and 2-6-6-2 go for $750 or so on the secondary market. The Vision Line stuff is usually over $1000.

No apologies necessary, I'm often guilty of the same thing!!! I'll probably try to track down an Atlantic as I really don't want one of those behemoth steam engines.

I bought the Legacy pre-war PRR K-4 here for $650 shipped back in January, it has whistle smoke and is a very nice scale locomotive.  You just have to keep your eye out.

I did see some dealers, like Charles Ro, price the new Lionel Alton Limited (item #11338) at $600, including at York.

$699 at Charles Ro now.

 

Just on their website, hmmm interesting! About $400 off list, not bad at all!

Hope they have some altons left at tax time. Would love to pic one up then myself at that price. I am also wanting a steamer with whistle steam. I have to keep my eye out then.

The old toy-size Alton Limited that Lionel did in 1981 was a good seller. Most likely because of the brighter, glossier colors and its modest size.

 

The new engine's colors seem more mundane by comparison....

The Alton has great sounds but the whistle is horrible, sounds like a diesel. Lionel still may be able to exchange the chip, better call before ordering one.

 

David - Thanks for the tip. Just my luck to buy a loco because I want the whistle effect and then get a terrible whistle!!

I think Nicholas Smith has the Tuscan K4's on sale for around $600. I know he had them at York for that price.

Lionel also recently blew out the Blue Comet. A far nicer looking engine. Some dealers had them under $700. If it were me I'd look for a black engine that could be utilized in freight and passenger service. 

Look around for that SF Northern. Outstanding!!!  Sooner or later it will show up again.  Lionel still has them in stock.

I also purchased one of the Lionel #6-11319 K4 W/Legacy. In fact the last 6 Steam Engines that I have purchased all have whistle smoke. I really like that whistle smoke. Good Luck, you will find something.

Nassau Hobby website shows the 11319 K4 for 549.99.  When I placed it in my cart, it accepted the transaction, and then placed the item out of stock.  Most likely they only have one left.  If there is an interest in this particular model, it may be worth a call to them.  List price 899.99.
