I cannot post pictures just yet, but I have seen some rather neatly done weathering jobs on tankers. In one such picture, I could not for the life of me tell the real tanker from the 0 gauge tanker it replicated. I suspect, some soft air brushing with various shades that replicate grime and dirt were used along with actual grit to give the trucks that look of mile post after mile post weathering.

I only have one modern tanker. A GATX tanker which is part of the tank train series. Anyway, I plan on weathering it one day, but for now, I run a clean railroad. LOL

I suggest also looking at various modeling sites. Professional modelers will often, like artist, post their works on line to let everyone see their handy work. They also post the tools and steps necessary to accomplish what they did. I used one website that dealt with German Tanks and WWII tanks in general. There I learned allot about painting and detailing my Tiger 1 for example so as one could not tell it from its 1:1 scale cousin.

Anyway, best of luck with your project.

Pete
