Title pretty much says it all. I'm looking for info on Lionel's plastic shell 2-6-4 steamers.
I know they were only a few models and only produced in the early 80s.
Any addition info would be appreciated.

They produced two. One was NYNH&H #8007, and the other was Nickel Plate #8001. They both came with DC-only motors (no AC to DC reverse board), smoke, headlight, and oddly enough... firebox glow!
They were equipped with a #243-type square tender with "Mechanical Sound of Steam".

If I remember correctly, The New Haven was set only, and the Nickel Plate was separate sale only. The NKP appears scarcer of the .
Years ago picked up the 8001 Nickel Plate Rd. Didnt realize that it should be a 2-6-4 rather than a 2-6-2 until one of the forum members pointed it out. It also doesnt have the mechanical sound sound the steam, as the tender frame does not have the cutout for where the spinning drum would go.
For anyone out there who owns this one or the 8007, is the bottom labeled DC only ?
(see second photo)
I have the 8007...it was my first train set when I was a kid. The set was called "The New Englander". It came with a Conrail boxcar, Burlington gondola, Mobile Gas tank car, and a NHNY&H caboose. Also came with small DC transformer and O-27 track.

Hi Ed,
I have the 8007. It does not have a label for "DC only". Also, it does not have roller pickups like your photo shows...just a center rail contact piece on mine.
