It looks like a dead B&O EM1. This is sad!
B&O 2-8-8-4 Class EM-1 #659 shown at Butler PA 5/28/61 {Bob Rathke Photo}
Seem to remember having read that this unit was taken out of service in 1959 and was employed as a stationary source of steam for a chemical plant. Finally relieved of that duty she is heading for scrap. Pity.......she received a reprieve of sorts but to no avail if that was the case.
Wow N&W, do you happen to know what time of day the pic was taken? I was thinking we might get a response with a class designation but did not expect this much info.

Man that is sad. But lots of steam was being cut up then. I'm surprised anyone even took a photo.
Sadder still, some steam in that part of the country was cut up well into the 1970s!
Fireone,
Judging by the north-south orientation of the track and the resulting shadows I would estimate 2:52PM ,,,,,naw, just kidding.....the only reason I was familiar with some of the history behind this engine is that I own Lionel's release of # 659 and in my data base I research the active years of service so when I make up a train the consist is plausible from a date perspective.........
