My old 1666 has developed a case of loose wheels on the axle shaft. This is allowing them to wander in and out of gauge with the expected derailments. Is there a reasonable cure for the problem?

You could try using some epoxy adhesive, or JB weld and glue the wheels back into place. Or an alternative might be to cut a piece of suitable plastic tube to the correct length for the wheel spacing. Slice this tube lengthways so that you can open the tube up, and then fit it over the axle. Depending upon the thickness of the axle, a used ballpoint pen might provide some suitable tubing.
A drop of any quality CA glue will hold them in place.
Just be certain to clean away and dirt , grease or oil.
I would use mineral spirits for the cleaning.
Shaft Loctite.
You can also put a knurled mark on the end if the axle with a wire cutter Used on the diagonal. Just enough to get some meat raised up so as to grip the wheel. This method allows the wheels to be removed easier if needed.

Some people believe there isn't anything that can't be fixed duct tape.
