My sound quit as I was running and can not reset to gain sound. Lights, couplers, speed work....just no sound. Assuming the sound board just gave up, what do I replace the board with? I'm new to this problem so would need the number of the Railsounds Board. There seems to be many choices and don't want to order "steam" sound! Thanks everyone, George

Is this K25301? There are actually 2 boards for sound in these units. First try reseating the boards. Sometimes there's a chance this gets you going. If that fails substitute a working compatible sound board for the suspected failed board. Do the same for the power board. Process of elimination.
ERR kits are available here:

You'll want the F3/F7 sound set. I believe these will come with both boards you need.

Wendell is partially correct. The F3/F7 sound board is one of the two boards you need. And this is available from ERR - Sunset models and any of their distributors. However, the power board used in your engine is not available from Sunset. You have the choice of ordering direct from Lionel parts department or going to someone who does upgrades. Suggest contacting royztrains.com for a used (cheaper) power board and they are ERR distributors as well.

Actually, neither one of the above postings is correct.
That's a fairly standard RailSounds 4 system in your K-Line F-3's. It uses a RailSounds 4 audio board, a RailSounds 4 (Universal) power board, and a motherboard to connect the two. These boards haven't been part of the Electric Railroad (now Sunset) catalog for awhile, as their systems currently use a variant of the RailSounds Lite board.
If you have another RailSounds 4 locomotive handy, you can swap-out the boards to determine which has gone bad. If you can't, it's best to have someone experienced with these boards look over your loco. The boards are available from Lionel $40-$45 each.
Lastly, drop me a note if you need a RailSounds 4 audio board, as I have a few extras to sell.

Thank you for clarification TRW.
Thanks for the info. I might as well just take it to Sommerfelds for repairs. I need an excuse to go there anyways. GM
Check speaker first, check volume pot also. Wire connections and such to the mother board. After that the swapping of the Boards TRW stated. If the PS board replace it. IF RS fixes it, take the bad one pull chips with puller and replace and retest. If still bad, replace board. G
