I'm in the process of improving and aligning track (and its subroadbed) on my PRR Panhandle Division.  I've noticed that in serveral spots my GarGraves track is slightly flattened or lower at the joints.  These low spots are troublesome because locomotive pilots (cow-catchers) can contact the center rail and short out.  I have attempted to counter the problem by inserting 2" long plastic shims under the joints (extending about 2-3 ties back from the joint on either side of it).  This raises the entire joint by a small fraction.

Have any of you encountered this?  If so, how did you solve it?

Thanks,

George

I had the same problem but never so bad that the steam pilots touched the center rail. Are all your track sections that way? I buy my Gargraves buy the case and only come across a few pieces that where like that. I think it is shipping damage. I noticed before I installed the track then just used those pieces where i would cut it off anyway, or used shims like you.

Clem, to answer the question:  No, not all of my track ends are like that.  And I don't think I bought any of my GarGraves as a case (I really can't remember);  I know I've bought 2-5 straight flex pieces at a clip.  These two spots are particularly troublesome because they are on a downgrade - it exaggerates the issue.

Maybe there is something to be said about a solid rail product like the Atlas O track.

Thanks guys!  I was beginning to believe it was something I was doing wrong in laying the track.

I'll keep using shims wherever I see this.
