I'm upgrading a conventional Lionel R-11 (#6-28553) to 3rdRail Cruise Commander and want to lube the internal gearing on it . I get it down to the "bolster" but no further.
Also, regarding the original electronics in the engine, what does the AC regulator board do? I am planning to take it out as the 3rdRail instructions say put no caps in the power circuit

You'll want to lose the regulator and modify the smoke unit with a 27 ohm resistor instead of the 8 ohm one. The conventional smoke voltage regulator won't allow you to have command control of the smoke.

You mean the RS-11?
yes sorry it's a conventional Alco RS-11 28533
Fred, no caps in the power circuit refers to the motor leads not the smoke unit.

Aa far as lubing. Remove the pickup roller assembly. Then the 4 small screws holding the bottom gearbox cover on. This will expose the gear, worm, and the bottom of the bearing that the liondrive coupling spins in.

Rick, sorry, but I don't see how the pick-up rollers are removed, unless it's by removing the other 4 tiny screws on the sides, 2 of which are hidden by the drivers.
Incidentally, one of the ground screws attached to a ground lead is missing. Have any idea what size? I don't have anything that fits.
