need advice on what type on oil is best for 1950-60 rolling stock wheels, also modern Diesel engine. Thank you for the help.

I recommend using an automotive type synthetic motor oil for lubrication on all axles. (always keep the oil off of the wheel surface, itself.) The synthetic oils, as I understand, will not attack plastics and they won't dry out after a few years of operation or storage. I actually use a synthetic oil with a teflon additive, but I son't know if these are available any longer.

I use LaBelle's oil with "Teflon" on Post-War cars. Place a drop on each side of the wheel, then spin the wheel. If it spins freely, you car good to go!.
Mobil 1........plastic compatible, super lubricant. A quart will last you forever.

Just get yourself a couple of these needle applicators and put the Mobil 1 inside and you're good to go.

what about on drive gear. seams like a heavier weight would be needed. mobil one is a great product though at least in automotive and powersports applications. almost as good ad rotella
For the gears use Red and Tacky
