What is the correct or best way to lube an MTH steam engine?  They have little screw  holes below each axle of the driving wheels marked "grease"  I have greased them this way in the past.  However, recently one of my MTH steamers came up with a stripped or worn main gear on a drive axle.  Apparently the gear was not getting enough grease the way I was doing it.  Is it necessarly to take the boiler off the chasis and open the gear box to do a proper job?  I hate doing this because you run the risk of damaging wiring or something else every time you disassemble the engine.  The engine in question is a 4-8-4 Premier Santa Fe Northern.

The key phrase is: "the way I was doing it". The method outlined by MTH - and they

know better than anyone - is completely correct. Make sure that there is enough grease

injected/squeezed into the access hole. There is nothing that you can do that will lubricate

the gears better than this. If the greasing was inadequate, you were doing it wrong.

Having said that, sometimes gears are faulty or mounted in a shaft incorrectly - or mis-used by the owner/previous owner. Things do break, regardless of what we do.

Follow the instructions.
