In the 70's I worked at the Topeka Shops, when all it was car work. (all locomotive repair now)  When we put trucks under a car, we threw in four or five "cookies". They were a waxy material mixed with graphite, about 4" across and maybe 1/8 to 1'4" thick, the center plate came down on them, and after a few curves, they were smashed and smeared down to just a dry lube. We had to adjust the side bearing clearance first, then jack it up enough to toss in the cookies.
