Just got "lightly" used E-8 ABA Orange Blossom Special, PSd-1. Question on  smoke fluid: just one inlet for each engine, the larger of the two openings toward front/nose?  Also, how do I know if I need to grease the worm gear (removing shell & truck)? Manual says 50 hrs.  If I want to upgrade to PS-2, do I just order kit from MTH? Or better to have certified tech do it? Since there are two power units, does that make it more complicated and expensive?

I just put the smoke fluid into the one with the shorter path to the smoke unit, that varies for the engines.  For that locomotive, I think it may be the rear.

Whenever I get a new engine, I do the maintenance, then I know what I'm dealing with.

As far as upgrading to PS/2, yes having two power units is a complication as end users can't order the slave kits, only MTH techs.  As far as doing the installation, that's an individual thing, without knowing your level of expertise, it's hard to answer that one.

The e-8 has plenty of room, but the slave upgrades are more complicated.  With a ASC tech, you get a warranty, so there is benefit to that.

I am with John, best to open up and  inspect.  Take a close look at how the unit runs with PS-1 with shells off.

When I have seen mechanical issues on ABA, it has been the E-8s.  G
