I think it is time to do some maintenance on my locos -  this is something I have just put off because for whatever reason.... So looking for some advice.....I have MTH and Williams locomotives.

I will list what i think needs to done and would like any other tips or items i miss.

1.  Grease the gears.

2. lubricate wheels and rollers

3.  check tires.

4.  I have some batteries in the DCS that have to be pushing 20 years....what is the new battery I should be replacing with?

The attached picture shows lubricant I purchase a couple years ago and has just been sitting around.   Does this work for 1 and 2 above

Finally,   I have an E8 I think -to change the tires looks like you have to the entire truck off and the screws are on the bottom - very difficult to get to any tips on changing those tires?

I recently did this on all my locos.

1st thing I did was clean the gunk off.  For diesels I cleaned the wheels and the gears then put the trucks in an ultrasonic cleaner to remove any remaining debris.  Then I lubed.

The ultrasonic cleaner I have is not big enough to put an entire steam loco chassis in so I cleaned as much as I could off using tweezers, cloth, paper towel, whatever it took to do the job.  Then I lubed.  I probably over lube but so far have had no problems operating.

My cat gets on the layout, surprised (shouldn't be) at the amount of cat hair that gets wrapped around every moving part.  That's where a fine set of tweezers come in.  Now I'm using a Shark handheld vacuum once a month to clean debris off the track.

Oh yeah...on diesels remove the truck sideframes 1st so you can get to the gears.
