I have been running MTH Rail King (PS 2.0) quite a bit pulling a 10 to 11 car Chief train.  The engine has been shutting down in mid stride - literally shutting down electronics and all.  I have been able to start up again but it is then maybe good for a lap or so the next shutdown occurs.  The overload light comes on the transformer (MRC Pure Power) whenever the shut down occurs and the DCS remote displays the ominous message "Maintenance Required".  The locomotive has been oiled and greased and since the shut downs started occurring, I replaced the internal battery with a BCR2.  The BCR2 helped for a day or two but tonight the shut downs started occurring again with the "Maintenance Required!" message on the DCS remote and the overload light on the transformer.  Is this a sign of a board going bad?  Any help or advice will be appreciated!  The Rail King Santa Fe Northern no. 2927 (Rail King no. 30-1465-1) now has 1067 scale miles on its digital odometer and 28 hours of run time.

Thanks, guys.  I will try both those suggestions.  I will need to do the reset because the Northern now has more than 1000 scale miles and that requires a reset to get the maintenance required message cleared.  Now that track cleaning is mentioned, I recalled my new Rail King E-6 was having the same issue with sudden stops so that is probably the other problem.

I have seen that shutdown with the combination of dirty engine wheels and center rail pickup, especially when coupled with dirty track.

The other thing that may occur with and engine running with heavy loads that much is a motor going bad.  In a few case you said you hit a transformer overload.  That would also shut the engne down if the breaker opened.

Do you have the ability to see how much current the engine is drawing with you set up?  G

Don't have ability to check the current, but my Rail King E-6 was doing the same thing with 10-11 cars.  That leads me to conclude it is the track conditions or the number of cars.  Neither locomotive seems to have any problems pulling 10-11 cars but the Northern did not shut down with just a 9 car consist and a Northern - E-6 lash up with 12-14 cars does not shut down.

You can reset the Maintaince required message under the "more" softkey. It's usually near the bottom of the list. Battery must be up to par to have  the reset stick. I used to run 2 RS-s lashed -up and had the same experience as you, A couple of times around the layout with a real heavy train (diecast hoppers) and the train would eventually stall . I think you can over load some engines and will eventually burn them out.

Thanks for the advice, Gregg!  I definitely do not want to burn out my Santa Fe Northern.  No. 2927 is the locomotive I operate the most and is near and dear to me.  So I guess I will reduce the consist down from 10-11 cars to 7 or 8 and see how that goes.  My Lionmaster Challenger has been pulling 41 Rail King cars without any issues.

Problem solved!  The Rail King Santa Fe Northern runs smoothly and with no problems as long as the consist is 9 or fewer Rail King passenger cars.  More than that load and there could be trouble.  Odometer now above 1100 scale miles and maintenance required warning was soft key reset.  Thanks all responders for the advice and assistance.
