I stumbled upon this the other day on You Tube. The process uses styrene pieces glued to Plexiglas. I think the finished item looks better than the example shown in the beginning, so you might want to skip ahead and take a look before you rule it out.
It has all the items I look for in a project, easy enough that I can do it, relatively cheap resources needed and the finished product looks good.
