Had a blast at the show! Congrats to Brad Kowal and crew for a FANTASTIC show. The OGR Meet and Greet was fun, even for us few whom attended. It always is nice to match up faces with names. Many like Hot Water, are from the Chicago area like myself. There is also a fellow forum member who likes like a half mile from me, out in the south suburbs! Don't know how I missed Eric Stots 73 ft lumber car? Wish I had seen that for some pics. I did not talk to Eric as I've heard all his excuses / stories of whoa! Did get some detail pics of the Atlas Greenbrier Auto Max car. Nice car with better detail than expected. looking forward to the actual painted cars!

@rheil posted:Sunset / 3rd Rail was at the show but not represented by Scott Mann or me. This was the first show I have missed in 30 years for Sunset. Jonathan Peiffer was there representing Sunset / 3rd Rail.
Sunset was represented, but we just didn't have a huge presence with models to show. We only had flyers. Scott and I talked today and next year we will try and have some models shipped out for more of a presence.
I did however talk to lots of wonderful people who were so knowledgeable about the product and asked lots of excellent questions. The most asked question was the status of the SD40-2 which as I told everyone who asked, we should have first round 3D cad files to review in May after research was submitted in November. Second most asked question was whether or not the FAs were going to move forward. The answer is yes! Research starts in very soon.
Of course lots of question on the status of GGD passenger cars and other projects. Those of you who saw the handout know one of the surprise announcements that came to fruition on just Wednesday prior to the show. I love keeping a good secret so you will have to wait for the next OGR ad to see the surprise.
As a first time attendee, I had a great time at this show. I wish I could have taken more home with me, but having limited space in my baggage to fly stuff home and the fact that my very loving wife was with me I simply found an accurate 2 rail CNJ tender for my Pacific project and a 2 rail Sunset GG1 managed to come home with me courtesy of Mr. Heil who had it delivered to me at the show.

Yeah, that model caught my eye too! With the red boxes sitting behind it might be a WS import. Looks to be in excellent condition and something I'm looking for.......oh well.....maybe next year.

So... you got another "G"; how many is that now...? 🙂

Easier as a list:
- 18 Scale O
- 1 PW 2332 Traditional Sized
- 6 N scale
- 50??? +/- HO scale
The only challenge is that some of my HO scale 50's-60's era models have suffered from zinc pest so I need to recalculate next time I go through my HO collection to compensate for the ones that are now partial models or turned to dust.
There was a very nice older model of a GG1 at a wonderful price that I had my eye on. I didn't look as closely as I should have. It could have been a Duddy or Alexander. Slim chance it could have been a Custom Brass. I could just not justify bringing it home so I didn't tempt fate by investigating it further. Maybe it will be there next year?
John, good to see you at the show this past weekend! Not looking for anything big, I picked up a few odds and ends. Found another DPM Birdies Tavern kit (I have 8 already), some trucks, and a couple of O Scale Turnouts #8s. Saw some other goodies, but kept myself from getting into the must buy it frenzy! Did look at the TSC resin car kits, but the Thrall gondola seemed too light for me. No place to add weight to an empty car. Nice kits but pricy! I did look at some very old Yank kits of old 50s era tract ranch homes. Very crude kits by todays standards, but probably nice for their era. Kind of reminded me of home you'd see on cable TV, Reel America series about the post WWII housing boom.
In the FWIW column Erik Stott has made it clear the locomotives are on hold until he can get to Korea in person to resolve the final issues. When will that be? No clue. Apparently there is another Covid wave surging through Asia so who knows. In the meanwhile he is moving forward on the Bethgons and the lumber cars. The Bethgons are in production now and he is awaiting the physical sample that was photographed for the show before approving the production go ahead for these cars. If anyone has any ideas for high end freight cars they would be interested in... We discussed Auto racks to compliment the Atlas sample that was there.
The lumber cars will also have operating titelok couplers and I asked him about doing additional couplers. The Bethgons will have ASF trucks that have not been modeled previously and I have asked about making those trucks available too. If this does happen it will probably be a one time good deal so if you are interested get you interests known.
I also enjoyed the awesome displayed circus train that the crew had located in a very appropriate location.

The VGN "Battleship" gondolas are finally shipping???
Wow those are nice! 👍especially like the Santa Fe McKeen Car.

Both were completely scratch built by Ralph Nelson.
Beautiful models!!
Anyone know what the McKeen car construction process is? 3D printed body, built up wood, plastic sides???
I am just curious.
Any help appreciated.
Truly outstanding model regardless of method used.

It's on the contest entry form - that's a Kidder brass import McKeen car

In the voting, I actually voted for the scratch built doodlebug. The photos don't do justice for how wonderful a build this model was when seen in person. When I only all to briefly got to visit with Jack he sked me if I brought a model to enter. After seeing the entries, I'm scared to bring my work
Someone asked about the SP Mikes in the contest area, and now I am curious too.
Due to time constraints I was too quick through those models / was thinking that they were built from Stevenson kits; but I am now not sure
Can anyone provide details on the SP Mikes ?
Thanks for the clarification mwb. I thought it was scratch built, not a brass import.
I wish I could have attended this show.

...so have those brass Mikes bob2 asked about been identified?

Yes, Kidder did these a long time ago and there were a couple of versions as well; the one variety, a bit on the short side, comes up for sale now and again.
I wish I could have attended this show.
Yes, but the cost of attending far outweighed the benefits of buying more trains and parts that I do not need....
For all the Atlas stuff that was there for sale there was not a single Atlas contemporary freight car to be found. No Gunderson 53' stack cars, no 5161 hoppers no 25K tank cars, no containers. Just lots of older cars, most of which were still there when the show ended.
Rdunniii,
You must have missed them. I saw quite a few modern Atlas freight cars for sale a few rows to the right of the entrance. Granted, not terribly well displayed. I needed to stop and read the end of the Atlas boxes which were still in shipping cartons sitting on the tables. On the other hand I saw a HUGE number of older Atlas cars sell a little further down on the right front. What started as six rows high of cars on Friday PM was 1.5 rows high by Sunday morning.
Most dealers were VERY happy with sales at this show. Saturday AM, in particular was very strong for sales.

It may depend on how you define modern. For me that is prototype stuff from the past 25 years. There were couple of people there who thought 60s-80s was modern. Isn't to me. Even GE Dash9s are too old for me.
Anything newer than 1950 or older than 1890 - no interest at all. It is like dollhouses - an exacting hobby; just not my thing.
There was a Milwaukee "Skytop" in the contest. Scratchbuilt?
I am with you bob2, except I go from 1890’s to around 1957ish when the ACL repainted their purple diesels black. True confessions-I did order the Sunset black E6 in Scott’s rerun. ACL referred to them as Black Cadillacs I think.
I attached a few pictures of the motor cars on the Rockford O Scalers layout. Unfortunately these units did not visit during the March Meet (the pictures were taken several months ago) but I thought people would enjoy seeing them on a layout. Have to love it when people come to visit and bring really cool stuff.

That's because they both were entered in the Model Contest.

In past years, some of that year's contest winning models have visited the ROS layout during the meet. The ROS open house is after the contest has finished.

FWIW: I see there's currently a House of Duddy "G" listed on the bay for what seems to be a reasonable price...in case you haven't already seen it...

I will simply repeat what I told Bob when he told he would send the Sunset GG1 out my way to pick up at the show. My exact words were, "My wife will kill me." When I told my wife her exacts words were, "You are dead."
I will take that as a small hint that perhaps I will have to pass on this opportunity..... for now.
In all honesty my wife is very supportive of my hobby, she would just like me to get rid of the excess items I have to create room for new ones.
That’s my truce with mine. Sell current to buy new.
Very common tale.

I agree with rdunniii would like to see Scott do a modern GE diesel after the GE-9s, would also include Atlas but it appears with their acquisition of MTH tooling it will be strictly Premier diesels in the future, the new Atlas Mline maxi-stack looks great they should consider a Mline centerbeam in the future Erics model looks terrific but not for multiple purchases for most of us. Been doing that for years now and as fast as I sell off stuff, I just build 2 more to take the place of each sold. You guys need to help out and buy more of my stuff when I'm at Strasburg on the 23rd!!!

Make sure you let Scott know if you're interested especially in an ET44. Both MTH/Atlas and Lionel make ES44s. Both also made an AC4400 but both are less than stellar. The Dash 9s are not too far from being cancelled due to lack of reservations. I had a bunch reserved as I want the chassis to replace the ones on my Lionel ES44s.

As a plug for the Dash 9s, I think there is a misconception that these locomotives will be just like the brass ones of 1999. The reality is that they will be all new tooling and with the current Sunset drive, a vastly superior locomotive in both prototype fidelity and running qualities.
I know you know this Richard!
Congratulations to the committee that ran the show. WELL DONE! Very enjoyable time.
Thanks.
