Perhaps it is just some good ol' stirring of the pot but the FWRHS's Facebook page has been hinting at a return of the Mars light...any snowballs chance in h*ll?

I like the engine both ways! It would be great if they could install it every other year.
And have a night photo runby with the Mars light shining - in a drizzle or in a little fog so we can see the beam moving.
Years ago I saw a 16mm film of a SP GS-4 approaching the camera at night in a mist. I could see the beam moving in a figure-8 pattern
I do, too.
They can put an old man with a kerosene lantern up there just so long as she is under steam and operating...

Since the smokebox front door assembly had to be replaced, the mounting holes for the Mars Light bracket are no longer present. Plus, the last I recall, the Mars Light no longer worked, way back then, and that was why it was removed and the mounting holes were plugged.
Soooooo, if the Mars Light no longer functioned, which would be an FRA violation if it were to be re-mounted anyway, plus new holes would have to be drilled in the nice new front door, That just seems to be an awful lot of extra work for nothing. However, that is just one opinion.
The light has been getting worked on this winter.....

Rich is too busy. lol!
Plus with the operating season a month away, I think there are a lot more important things to do than worry about the mars light.
The insurance company ought to give a safety equipment discount if the MARS light is put on the 765.

They did. The premium went from $81,000 to $80,999.
And I'm glad that SOMEONE finally noticed that the Facebook post with the picture went up on April 1. What does that tell you?

That NEXT April 1st we'll have another Mars Light discussion???

We should have put a picture up of a firing valve and a burner for the conversion to oil....

Ooooooo....ROTFLMAO.....

I would LOVE to convert the 765 to burn oil. It would be so much cheaper to run and easier to "refuel" than it is with coal.
But that ain't gonna happen any time soon...
I'd rather see her run on oil than not run at all, but you know some people...
I say Mars light...and fuel oil ! And then a full set of remote cab Diesel MU controls too! Hey as long as the Monopoly money is warmed up, how about a full set of Timken Hy-Dynamic roller ended rods....and for those feeling really frisky...A Franklin Rotary "B" poppet valve set with Kylchap exhaust system ! Anyone thinking Booster?
While I have not (yet) been lucky enough to pick up the Lionel Legacy version of the NKP 765 (no Mars Light), I do have the TMCC version of the NKP 779 that Lionel produced in 2003 (a not quite scale/accurate Mars light on an otherwise beautiful model.)
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, but I much prefer the Berk without the Mars light. It makes for a cleaner front end with a nicely centered headlight with less clutter around it....IMHO.
Every day is April Fools Day until 04/15....if you're a CPA.
Living in Fort Wayne has it advantages.
The weather was awesome today, so my son Nathan and I after visiting a new Pick-a-Part auto salvage yard, dropped by the FWRHS shop.
Without providing any names, I asked a direct question about the MARS light.
To summary the conversation, NS requested that if the 765 runs with them this summer, we either need to install Ditch Lights or reinstall the MARS light.
well, that's certainly interesting if true. 630 has neither and certainly has been racking up the miles for the past month or so.
Kevin
Yeah 630 has been running w/o that as Kevin stated....interesting.

Oil, and not Diesel. 844 has issues caused by buring big D!
