I am building a new layout in my train room, dedicated strictly to clockwork, pre-war trains. Right now I’m working on a Marx M00005 that runs like a jack rabbit. However, I have no idea what consist of cars it was pulling when it was sold as a set. Can anyone help me? Thanks very much and a happy new year to all! Jim

My M10005 clockwork set (which looks like this) came with three passenger cars.
The caboose would be a brown and yellow UP with a brown frame, a B&LE boxcar with litho doors and a Groceries and Sundries gondola. All cars would have the sliding tab & slot coupler. Set 763.

Jim, glad to hear that there is someone else building a dedicated clockwork layout! That is a nice set of M10005 locos. To follow up Steve's comments, the set can be seen in the 1951 Montgomery Wards catalog. The caboose with the brown frame is a relatively hard to find item, although a common black frame version can stand in while you are hunting the right one.
Of course, articulated passenger trains led by a single M10005 can be found in catalogs both pre-war and post-war. Also, there is another freight train with a single M10005 as seen in the 1952 Sears catalog - it appears to have a Santa Fe tank car along with the Groceries and Sundries gondola. I suspect that it had the same brown frame UP caboose, although I can't verify that from the catalog illustration.
Looking forward to seeing progress on your clockwork layout - please keep us posted!
Would love to see some clockwork dedicated layouts or ideas for clockwork layouts.
Not a permanent layout, but a clockwork holiday display:
Gonna go bigger in 2023.

What a great looking layout. Clockwork trains have really captured my imagination.
