What is the liquid smoke made of? Is it oil or was it some type of chemical? Does it make any difference what brand you use?

I use Lionel Premium smoke fluid in all non-pill type smoke units, and sometimes even in the pill type. Works well, for my limited use.
I have some old Marx smoke liquid and used some in an older Lionel. It worked, had a paraffin smell. I think it is a light oil. I tried electric razor oil recently and it seemed to work Ok but they all say not to use anything but THEIR oil. I really can't believe there is some magic formula.
The 'magic' of smoke fluid is that it is non-flammable. Any flammable liquid should NOT be used.
Most commercially available smoke fluids can be used in any liquid (and pellet) type smoke unit, with the exception of older American Flyer engines.

I use Marx scented Mega-Steam in my 333. Good stuff.
I'm guessing Naptha is out??
Is the Mega Steam what is sbeing old on Ebay?
I guess you can use Naphtha if you don't mind real sparks coming out the smoke stack...

Here is a list of Megasteam flavors. I have never tried "Marx" fluid. I don't know what the original smelled like.
You can order direct from Megasteam.
with the exception of older American Flyer engines.
I've never heard of anything like this and am having trouble picturing why AF units would be fussy about the type of fluid used.
Would you expand on this, please?
I have several bottles of original Marx smoke fluid. I don't know its contents but it possesses a pleasant gentle aroma and it smokes pretty decent as well. Its one of my favorites. I have not tried the Megasteam Marx scent and am wondering how it stacks up against the original.
