hi guys

I recently got a Marx engine from eBay that was in “as is” untested condition, so I wasn’t expecting it to work. And when I got my hands on it, guess what, it didn’t work. I’ve put some oil in the gears, and nothing, and then I noticed that the some of the motor parts had been caked in oil, and grime. So I decided to scrape off the grime, and STILL nothing, so at this point I don’t know what to do, so I’m turning to the expert’s to determine what to do now. What should I do now?

                               Thanks, trainfam

Do you have an ohm meter to check the resistance between the three armature plates. They should all read the same. Next check for resistance from each plate to the armature shaft. Should be none. If that checks out it will ok to proceed. Use an Exacto knife blade to clean the grooves out between the armature plates. Use some 400 grit sand paper to polish the plates smooth.

Remove the brushes from the brush plate. If they are sticking that will cause the motor not to function. It looks like one brush is upside down. I use denatured alcohol on a Q-tip to clean out the brush holder slots. If the brushes are not too worn you can try to clean them with alcohol. Probably best just to replace them.

well I have been tinkering with the locomotives motor for a while, and was able to get it working! I will check on getting some new brushes just Incase I have to replace them in the future. Thank you for your help guys, I appreciate it.
